Why Do We Lose Our Hair Anyway - Reasons For Hair Loss By Redmund james at 2009-02-18 00:44:43

There are several interlinked reasons for hair loss. When it comes to it, the basics of hair loss are actually quite simple and they can unlock the secret to stopping hair loss and even regrowing hair you thought was long gone. In this article, I'll reveal the science behind hair loss.
DHT
The human body contains testosterone but in this form it is not all that useful. So the body converts this into hormone by-products known as "androgens". One of these is DHT.
DHT is used around the body e.g. in the liver, but is also made in the scalp. Unfortunately, as we age, the DHT is actually bad for our hair follicles.
Hair Follicles
Hair follicles are like the tiny manufacturing units for your hair. They make your hair slice by slice out of keratin, a very hard type of protein.
To do this they need fuel and they get that from accessing your network of blood vessels in your scalp.
DHT affects the hair follicles by affecting their access to these nutrients. As you age, your blood vessels become narrower and this is also a factor.
The result is that your hair follicles becomes more and more malnutritioned and produces thinner and thinner hair until it eventually stops producing hairs.
Dormant Follicles
When your follicles stop producing hairs they lie dormant. If they can be revived through "renutrification" then they can start producing hairs once more and get back to their former strength. They can only do this if it has been no more than around four years since they stopped producing hairs.
For most men, this means that even if they may not be able to completely erase their bald spot, they can still get back most of their lost hair, enough to make a huge difference to their appearance.
